We are Estella & Phil

Phil & I met at a Kennel Club Licensed Dog Training school in 2006 where Phil brought his 12 week old Manchester Terrier puppy for ringcraft training.

We both grew up with family dogs and had our own dogs before we met. Phil, Neapolitan Mastifs, Weimeraners and Great Danes. Myself, Bearded Collies, Cocker Spaniels & Portuguese Water Dogs…… and a rescue Collie x Terrier.

Together we built a successful Manchester Terrier Show/hobby kennel under the ‘Rattustrap’ affix.

The beginnings of the Black & Tan Coonhound in the UK:

We first saw the fantastic Black & Tan Coonhound in America in Southern Illinois. A majestic pack of Black and Tan Hounds were baying at the foot of a tree. The regal way the dogs carried themselves and their fantastic bay captured our imagination. We were smittenOnce home we began researching the breed. They appeared to be the ideal companion and fantastic family pet. Adaptable, happy & tolerant….certainly needed when living with Manchester Terriers! We then contacted breeders and built relationships….and waited.

In December 2013 Phil & I attended the 3 international Nordic shows held in Helsinki and saw the breed exhibited there. On returning I contacted Teija Urpelainen of the Necku Kennel. Teija kindly agreed to let two of her breeding come to the UK to start the breed beginnings here.

On the 23rd May 2014 I flew to Helsinki to collect the first two Black & Tans, Lahja, a beautiful 1 year old aloof girl & Shadow a goofy 6 month old puppy. Around that time I approached Zoe Bolin in California who had a litter due. Goose, from Zoes Jazzman Kennel, came to live with us and Lahja in July 2015, when Goose was a year old & after Zoe had successfully campaigned Goose to her American Championship.

The first 3 Black & Tan Coonhound litters were raised here in our Nottinghamshire home with 100% dedication to rearing very happy puppies where all of their mental, social & physical needs were met. These litters were co bred under the now defunct Scentaway kennel name.

Phil & I then imported Jester, Marti & Jinx for a solid, yet diverse foundation, and have continued our line of Black & Tan Coonhounds as Scenterbay. We are extremely fortunate to have good working relationships with Black & Tan Breeders worldwide who have helped & supported us since our initial enquiry.

Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshunds:

After much success with our Manchester Terriers we decided to scale down, not that we didn't absolutely adore the breed, more that we realised they did better in as sole companions, or as a pair. Historically they were just not pack dogs, and instinctively this had not changed over generations. We then began to look for a smaller breed more pack orientated breed. This led us to the joyous Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund and Betty Brown, our little Chocolate & Tan girl. The breed had fitted in a treat at Scenterbay!
